About
Matt is an early-career researcher at QUT in the School of Education. His research focuses on social and spatial mobility, teacher education, international education and the geopolitics of higher education. His PhD thesis explored how study abroad intersects with employability and soft power, drawing on Bourdieu’s Theory of Practice. His work combines empirical research with policy relevance, aiming to inform education through transdisciplinary and globally engaged scholarship. Matt has contributed to ARC-funded projects on the national teacher shortage and participated in collaborative research projects in Papua New Guinea, China and Canada. Matt has also worked extensively on various Australia Award projects with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) in Cambodia, Vietnam, Fiji, and Papua New Guinea. Matt was a member of the team receiving the Highly Commendable Award for Best Practice by the International Education Association of Australia (2023) for the Australia Awards Graduate Certificate in STEM Education course delivered to teachers from Papua New Guinea. Before entering academia, I worked in higher ed administrative roles. I also held director roles in two small not-for-profit organisations focused on international development and served in the military.
